Warren Community Elementary School Playground Project
During the 2013 – 2014 School Year, WCES was notified that the equipment students were using did not meet the regulation required for these areas. Areas of concerns related to entrapment areas, height of play equipment, deteriorated wood structures, rusted and exposed bolts as well as environmental hazards such as rocks and poor drainage.
In response to the inability to meet these regulations, a playground committee consisting of concerned families and school members began the process of identifying ways to remedy the problem. Several vendors were contacted and visited WCES to provide the most cost effective way to provide our students with the materials necessary to have age appropriate movement as well as socialization opportunities through the use of a community playground. The committee selected Northeast Playground Incorporated and were able to work out a discount thanks to working in conjunction with West Brookfield Elementary School as they are building a playground as well.
The committee began the process of fundraising and was able to raise roughly $23,000 towards the goal of up to $100,000. The cost of this proposal includes the resurfacing of tennis courts/basketball court, a new playscape designed to accommodate all elementary grade levels up to 150 students at a time, excavation and preparation of the play area site, remedying drainage concerns and repairing the baseball and soccer fields for community use. It is the intention of the committee to work with recreational youth sporting leagues to help offset the cost of maintenance. The committee is eager to continue to raise funds as a playground is an essential function for all students and a much needed area for our community.
